Benefits of Regular Massage Therapy*

Massage therapy dates back almost to the beginning of recorded human history. The ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments. Chinese massage textbooks date back more than 2,500 years, and Hippocrates – often referred to as the Father of Modern Medicine – wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for various health problems. In our modern era of medicine, the various benefits of massage have been documented through published studies.** According to Dr. Gregory P. Fontana, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles who conducted a pilot study of heart patients to measure the effectiveness of nontraditional therapies, such as massage, in helping speed recover after surgery. "Clearly there are medical benefits to massage."***

The human body continuously endures stresses from trauma, incorrect body mechanics, poor posture, as well as every day tension and stress. Regardless of whether the source of the stress is mechanical, postural or emotional, it can result in physical changes that may cause muscle tightness, fatigue, nagging discomfort and decreased joint mobility. While not intended to replace medical treatment, regular massages can assist in relieving both psychological and physical stress. Psychologically, massage can assist in relieving fatigue, reducing tension and anxiety, calming the nervous system and promoting a sense of relaxation and well being. Physically, periodic massages can help to reduce discomfort, assist in relaxing and refreshing muscles and offer renewed energy. You can learn of additional health benefits from massage therapy that may assist you with your individual concerns through discussion with your physician, or from your own research or experience.
