Pilates Workouts: Just What the Doctor Ordered

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Like many of us, doctors and other health care professionals often work in high-stress environments and, at the end of the day, they need a healthy way to unwind and release tension. Even physicians who practice Western medicine for a living can attest to the benefits of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), such as Pilates workouts, yoga and massage.

This article talks about the trend of doctors turning to Pilates and other alternative therapies for promoting stress relief and physical fitness. Not only do they prescribe these activities for their patients, but many of them participate in the workouts themselves. According to the author:

“A study published in the online version of Health Services Research in August (2011) found that 76 percent of health care workers and 83 percent of doctors and nurses used CAM, compared with 63 percent of the general population.”

Furthermore,

“Christy Brave, a nurse in Loyola’s pediatric intensive care unit, said she uses regular Jazzercize, which incorporates yoga and Pilates moves, to relax and take her mind off a stressful job. She teaches the exercise/dance and has offered it free to her fellow nurses.”

Physicians and other healthcare professionals are proving that alternative therapies don’t necessarily have to compete with Western medicine, and that they complement each other quite well.

Sore Back? Pilates Workouts Can Help

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Most of us know that sinking feeling: Yowch! — you’ve tweaked something in your back. Believe it or not, though, that could make this the perfect day for pilates workouts.

Just about everyone suffers low back pain at some point in their lives — 80 percent of American adults have been through it, according to Monique Parker of the University of New Mexico-Taos. Next to colds, sore backs are the second most common reason people call in sick.

But Parker is among the fitness experts who’d tell you that back pain shouldn’t stop you from moving. In fact, the odds are good that lack of activity is behind the problem to begin with. (more…)

Joseph Pilates – Fifty Years Ahead of His Time

Monday, December 12th, 2011

When you’re stretching out on the refromer, do you ever think to yourself – “who came up with this?”  We all owe a debt of gratitude to the forward thinking master of “contrology” or “Pilates” to Joseph Pilates.

German born Joseph Pilates was working in England when he was placed in forced internment in England at the outbreak of WWI. While in the internment camp, he began to develop exercises that eventually evolved into what we now know “Pilates”.

In the camp, Joseph Pilates worked to rehabilitate other detainees who were suffering from diseases and injuries. It was invention born of necessity that inspired him to use items that were available to him.  Bed springs and beer keg rings became resistance equipment, and were the unlikely beginnings of the equipment used today, like the reformer and the magic circle.

Joseph Pilates was quoted to say “I’m fifty years ahead of my time”, and “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness”. He was right on both accounts.  He would be astounded to see what his method of exercise has developed into, but he might also be thrilled and surprised to see how well Pilates has been accepted.

Pilates was an educator, entrepreneur, businessman, self-taught fitness guru and author. His books “Your Life” written in 1934 and “Return to Life Through Contrology” written in 1945 give you peek into the mind of this confident and seemingly tireless man.

It’s safe to say the exercise and fitness world would not be the same with out his contributions.

Prenatal Pilates: A Stronger, More Flexible Pregnant Body

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Women make a lot of lifestyle changes while pregnant. Doing what’s best for Baby’s growth and development becomes a primary focus, but too often that focus is on the pleasures expecting mothers give up: sushi, soft cheeses, alcohol, and caffeine–just to name a few.

Change doesn’t have to be about deprivation. Why not embrace a lifestyle change which not only benefits Baby, but also Mom? Practicing prenatal pilates can keep your body strong and flexible for a healthy delivery and recovery.

A recent article in the Minnetonka Patch quotes pilates instructor Lesley Koehnan:

“Prenatal Pilates teaches pregnant women body awareness for labor and delivery,” said Koehnan.

Koenan goes on to say that pilates can “strengthen the muscles of the legs, pelvis, arms, shoulders– and of course the core muscles, which are the muscles that hug our baby.”

In addition to the increased physical stamina and flexibility, pilates also conditions the mind through intense concentration, attention to breathing and muscular control. Breathing and mind-body connection play a large role in a healthy labor and delivery.

Can the same be said about coffee, rare tuna, or Brie?

Pilates Mat vs. Pilates Equipment

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Pilates Matwork teaches the basic principles and techniques of Pilates. Each class focuses on moving the spine in all four directions, developing overall strength and utilizing proper breathing. Participants use their own body strength or a variety of props (small weights, foam rollers, rings, bands, fit balls, etc), to add challenge and variety. There are many different kinds of mat classes, ranging from introductory classes to classes using props. Mat classes are convenient to incorporate into any workout plan and offered frequently throughout the week at Personal Best Pilates Studio (to view our current mat schedule, visit our website – www.kcpilates.com)

Certified Pilates Mat Instructor, Jasmine Bean comments, “For me, mat work is the first step to Pilates. I think it easier to learn the fundamentals such as breathing while closing the rib cage and engaging pelvic floor on the mat. I also think it is nice to have an idea of movements on the mat before taking them to the equipment. Additionally, mat classes at any level can always provide a challenge, which is my favorite part of mat work. Mat classes never get old or easy.”

Pilates can also be performed on different pieces of equipment including; the Reformer, Chair and Cadillac. Utilizing each different piece of equipment allows instructors to specialize each workout based on the needs of each client. The equipment can add resistance or assistance for strengthening and lengthening muscles. Equipment sessions can be done one-on-one or in a group setting. Because of the versatility of the Pilates equipment, clients may discover a more focused approach to reach his/her goals quickly.

Personal Best Pilates Certified Instructor, Becky Kenyon, gives another perspective, “I think the equipment can advance a person’s Pilates Mat practice by adding resistance to moves done on the mat (while also adding additional exercises that cannot be done on a mat). The equipment can assist someone who is feeling unsuccessful at mat work by adding resistance to modify for them as they increase their core strength. In conclusion, the equipment is awesome because it can modify workouts or make them more challenging, depending on the person and their goals.”

If you are trying to decide between rolling out the mat or making an appointment for a session using the equipment, you can feel at ease knowing that Pilates on the mat and the equipment provide amazing benefits. Ultimately the decision should be based on your goals, schedule and fitness level. If you are not sure, call the Personal Best Pilates Studio at 913.345.8787 and one of our team of elite Certified Pilates Instructors will help design a program to meet your needs.
