Prenatal Pilates Workouts Pass Muster with Marine Corps

If anybody’s an expert on prenatal workouts, it’s … the Marine Corps? Well, sure. They have had fitness pretty well figured out for a long time. And among their obstetric recommendations? Prenatal Pilates.

We couldn’t agree more.

It’s just nice to hear the Marines fall in step with what a lot of us have been saying for a long time. In an article advising moms- and dads-to-be on how to mind their health, the Corps outlines a number of fitness do’s and don’ts, and offers some suggestions for specific exercises aimed at keeping pregnant couples in shape.

“New science continues to back the relatively new notion that exercise during pregnancy can be a good thing,” the article says. “Most recently, it was shown that pregnant women who performed strength training three to five times a week lowered their risk of back pain, premature labor, gestational diabetes and cesarean deliveries — and experienced shortened recovery times …”

Also, the article notes, doctors recommend pregnant women get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days to help relieve aches and pains, improve mood, sleep and energy.

Hey, we wouldn’t disobey an order from the Marines. And in this case, you probably shouldn’t, either.
